Converting between hourly and annual pay

The standard conversion uses the hours you are paid for in a year: annual pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52. A full-time week of 40 hours is 2,080 paid hours, so $30 an hour is $62,400 a year, $5,200 a month or $1,200 a week. A quick mental shortcut: double the hourly rate and add three zeros.

Whether time off is paid changes the picture. An employee with 25 days of paid leave and holidays earns the full salary while working about 235 days, so the pay per hour actually worked is higher than the nominal rate. A contractor on a day rate earns nothing on days off — the same $240 a day yields about $56,400, not $62,400.

Pay frequencies are easy to mix up: bi-weekly means 26 pay cheques a year, semi-monthly means 24. A monthly salary is the yearly amount divided by 12 — not the weekly amount times four, because a month is 4.33 weeks on average. All figures here are gross, before tax and deductions.

How do I convert an hourly wage to an annual salary?

Multiply the hourly rate by the hours per week and by 52. At 40 hours a week: $25 × 40 × 52 = $52,000 a year.

How many working hours are there in a year?

A 40-hour week gives 2,080 paid hours (40 × 52). After typical holidays and vacation, people actually work roughly 1,800 to 1,900 hours.

What is the difference between bi-weekly and semi-monthly pay?

Bi-weekly pay arrives every two weeks, 26 times a year. Semi-monthly pay arrives twice a month, 24 times a year, so each cheque is slightly larger.

Is the result before or after tax?

Before tax. The calculator converts gross pay between periods; use the take-home pay calculator for an estimate of your net pay.

How do I work out a monthly salary from a weekly wage?

Multiply the weekly wage by 52 and divide by 12. Multiplying by four understates it, because the average month has 4.33 weeks.

Are my numbers stored or sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs in your browser. Your last inputs are remembered on your own device only, so the form is still filled in when you come back; use Reset to clear them.
