Why ToolCMB

A background remover that respects your photos

No upload, no account, no resolution limit behind a paywall.

AI on your device

A segmentation model finds the subject right in your browser using WebAssembly. No server sees the picture.

Before and after

Drag the divider across the picture to compare the cut-out with the original.

Manual touch-up

Paint with the erase or restore brush to correct edges the AI missed; every stroke can be undone.

Edge control

Make the edge crisp for products or soft for hair, and grow or shrink the cut-out to remove halos.

New background

Replace the background with any colour, a blurred version of the original or your own picture.

Original resolution

The result has the same pixel size as your photo, and can be cropped to the subject automatically.

Batch mode

Process up to 20 pictures in a row and download all cut-outs in one ZIP file.

Really free

No watermark, no credits and no account, because the work is done by your own device.

How does AI background removal work, and when is it private?

Background removal means separating the subject of a picture from everything behind it. A neural network trained on many thousands of photos predicts, for each area of the image, how likely it belongs to the main object. The result is a mask: white where the subject is, black for the background and grey along soft edges such as hair. Applying the mask as transparency gives the cut-out.

Most online background removers send your photo to a server, process it there and send the result back. This tool works differently: the model (U²-Net, an open-source segmentation network) is downloaded to your browser once and runs locally with WebAssembly. Your pictures are never uploaded, which matters for portraits, ID photos, unreleased products and client work. After the first download the model is cached and the tool also works with a slow connection.

The automatic result is best when the subject is clearly separated from the background: a person, a product, an animal or a vehicle in good light. Fine hair, glass, shadows and objects in a similar colour to the background are harder. For those cases switch to the Detailed model, raise the edge softness, or correct the mask with the brush. Save as PNG or WebP to keep transparency; JPG cannot store it.

Tips

  • Transparent PNG files of large photos can be heavy. Reduce them afterwards with the Image Compressor.
  • Create ready-to-post versions of your cut-out for every network with the Social Media Image Resizer.
  • A cut-out logo makes a clean site icon: turn it into a complete icon set with the Favicon Generator.
  • Marketplaces such as Amazon and eBay ask for a pure white background: choose “Colour” with #FFFFFF and download a JPG.

Frequently asked questions

Can’t find your answer? Contact us — we reply quickly.

Is the background remover really free?

Yes. There are no credits, no watermark and no paid high-resolution download. The processing is done by your own device, so it costs us nothing per image.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. The AI model is downloaded to your browser and runs there. The photos you open are processed locally and never leave your device.

Why is there a download the first time?

The AI engine and the model (about 8 MB together for the fast model) must be loaded once. Your browser keeps them, so the next visit starts immediately.

What is the maximum resolution?

The result keeps the resolution of your photo, up to about 80 megapixels. The mask is calculated at a lower resolution and scaled up, which is why very fine details can need a manual touch-up.

How do I get a transparent background?

Keep “Transparent” selected and download as PNG or WebP. JPG has no transparency; empty areas would become white.

The edge is not perfect. What can I do?

Try the Detailed model, adjust “Edge softness” and “Grow or shrink the subject”, or paint over the area with the erase or restore brush.
