How to edit an SRT file without breaking it

An SRT file can be edited in Notepad or TextEdit, but the format is easy to damage. Each block needs a number, a timecode line such as 00:01:02,500 --> 00:01:05,000 with a comma before the milliseconds, the text and a blank line. One missing blank line, or a dot instead of the comma, and some players skip the subtitle. An SRT editor online keeps the structure valid while you concentrate on text and timing.

Most jobs are small: fixing a typo, correcting a name, moving one subtitle that appears too early. For timing, select the start or end field and press the arrow keys to move it in steps of 100 ms, or load the video and use set start to the video position. When a subtitle carries too much text, split it at the cursor; the editor divides the time between the two halves in proportion to their text length.

While you edit the SRT file, chips next to each subtitle show reading speed in characters per second, duration and line length. They turn red when a limit of the chosen standard is exceeded, for example 20 CPS, 42 characters per line and a maximum of 7 seconds in the Netflix preset. After inserting or deleting subtitles, Sort & renumber restores a clean sequence. A draft is saved automatically in your browser, so an accidental reload does not cost the work.

Tips

  • If every subtitle is off by the same amount, SRT Time Shift is quicker than editing times one by one.
  • Subtitles that start in sync and slowly drift apart need SRT Sync, not manual edits.
  • Run the finished file through the SRT Validator before delivering it to a client or adding it to a video platform.
  • Long lines after a translation? The Subtitle Line Breaker re-breaks them to 42 or 37 characters in one pass.

How can I edit an SRT file online for free?

Open the file on this page, change text or times in the table and download the result. There is no account and no charge.

Is my subtitle file uploaded to a server?

No. The editor runs in your browser. The subtitle file, the video used for the preview and the automatic draft stay on your device and are never uploaded.

Can I create subtitles from scratch?

Yes. Start with an empty file, add subtitles and set each start and end time from the video position. For an existing transcript, TXT to SRT creates timed subtitles faster.

What happens if I close the tab by accident?

The editor saves a draft automatically in your browser. When the page is opened again on the same device and browser, the draft can be restored.

Can I use regular expressions in find and replace?

Yes. Find & replace supports match case and regular expressions, and it can be limited to the subtitles selected with the checkboxes.

Which formats can I save?

The editor exports SRT, VTT, ASS, SBV, TTML, LRC, SUB, TXT, CSV and JSON, in UTF-8 or another encoding and with Windows or Unix line endings.
