Working with audio durations
The duration of an audio file comes from its header and frame index, so the calculator can read hundreds of files in seconds without decoding them. For MP3 files without a VBR header, the length is estimated from the bitrate and can differ by a fraction of a second.
The Starts at column shows where each file would begin if the files were played back to back. Click Copy chapter list to get lines like “0:00 Intro / 3:25 Song 2” — paste them into a YouTube description to create chapters (the first chapter must start at 0:00 and you need at least three).
In Add times manually you can type durations in many formats: 3:45, 1:02:30, 95 (seconds) or 2m 30s.
Capacity of common media
| Medium | Maximum length |
|---|---|
| Audio CD | 74–80 minutes |
| Vinyl LP (12″, 33⅓ rpm) | about 22 minutes per side |
| Vinyl single (7″, 45 rpm) | about 5–7 minutes per side |
| YouTube chapters | min. 3 chapters, each ≥ 10 s |
