How to convert ASS to SRT without leftover tags and signs
ASS (Advanced SubStation Alpha) is the format of Aegisub and of nearly all anime fansubs. Besides text and times it stores named styles, exact screen positions, colours, fonts, karaoke timing and animations, all written as override tags in curly braces such as {\i1} or {\pos(640,360)}. SRT knows only text, times and a few simple tags. A converter that just copies the text leaves those codes, or even the coordinates of vector drawings, on the screen.
This converter reads the structure of the file. It removes override tags, karaoke syllables, animation, font changes and vector drawings, keeps italics and bold, and turns \N into real line breaks. ASS files often show several lines at the same moment, for example dialogue plus a translated sign, or one sign built from several typesetting layers. The options to sort by time, merge repeated lines and fix overlapping lines make such passages readable in players that expect one subtitle at a time.
The style list is the most useful control. A typical file has styles such as Default, Signs, OP and ED, and each is shown with its number of lines. Untick everything that is not dialogue and the SRT contains only the spoken lines, which is what TVs, phones and media servers handle best. Lines placed at the top can keep {\an8}. Other positions, fonts and effects cannot exist in SRT, so keep the original ASS file as well.
What happens to ASS features in the SRT file
| ASS feature | Example | In the SRT file |
|---|---|---|
| Italic and bold | {\i1}text{\i0} | Kept as <i> and <b> |
| Line break | \N | Real line break |
| Colours | {\c&H00FFFF&} | Removed, or kept as <font> (optional) |
| Top position | {\an8} | Removed, or kept as {\an8} (optional) |
| Karaoke and animation | {\k20}, {\t(...)}, {\move(...)} | Removed |
| Vector drawings | {\p1}m 0 0 l 100 0 | Removed |
Tips
- After converting, check the result with the SRT Validator; remaining overlaps and very short lines show up there.
- Fansub lines are often long. The Subtitle Line Breaker re-breaks them to 42 characters per line and two lines.
- For a web player, choose VTT as the output here or convert the result later with SRT to VTT.
- Keep the original .ass file: positions, fonts and effects cannot be restored from an SRT. If the episode is slightly early or late on your video, Subtitle Delay moves all lines at once.

What is the difference between ASS and SRT?
ASS stores styles, positions, colours, fonts, karaoke and animation next to the text. SRT stores numbered blocks of text with a start and an end time and only simple tags such as italics, which is why almost every player and TV can read it.
Does the converter also handle SSA files?
Yes. SubStation Alpha (.ssa) is the older version of the format and is converted in the same way as .ass files.
How do I leave out signs, karaoke and opening songs?
Use the style list. It shows every style found in the file with its number of lines; untick styles such as signs or song lyrics and only the remaining lines are written to the SRT.
Are colours and positions kept?
Italics and bold are always kept. Colours can optionally be kept as <font> tags and top positions as {\an8}. Other positions, fonts, animation and drawings are removed, because SRT cannot express them.
Why do some lines appear twice or overlap?
Typesetters often build one sign from several layers with the same text, and dialogue can run at the same time as a sign. Switch on merge repeated lines and fix overlapping lines to get one clean subtitle at a time.
Can I convert a whole season at once?
Yes, up to 100 files in one go, downloaded together as a ZIP. The files are converted in your browser and never uploaded.
