Size and appearance
GS1 allows 80 % to 200 % of the nominal size. Use at least 100 % when the printer is not high-end.
Scanners need dark bars on a light background. With these colors the code may not scan.

How a UPC number works
The Universal Product Code is the barcode scanned at checkouts in the United States and Canada. A UPC-A number (officially GTIN-12) has 12 digits: a company prefix licensed from GS1 US — its first digit is called the number system — an item number you assign to each product variant, and a final check digit.
The check digit guards against misreads. Add the digits in the odd positions (1st, 3rd, … 11th) and multiply by 3, add the digits in the even positions, and take what is missing to the next multiple of ten. For 03600029145 that is (0+6+0+2+1+5)×3 + (3+0+0+9+4) = 58, so the check digit is 2 and the full code is 036000291452.
UPC-E is a zero-suppressed short form for small packages such as cosmetics or candy. It is not a separate number: only UPC-A numbers with number system 0 or 1 and a run of zeros in the right place can be compressed, and the scanner expands them back to 12 digits. To sell on Amazon, Walmart or in stores you need numbers licensed from GS1; a generator only draws the bars for a number you already own.

How do I calculate a UPC check digit?
Add the digits in positions 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 and multiply the sum by 3. Add the digits in positions 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10. The check digit is the amount that brings the total to the next multiple of 10.
Can I generate UPC codes for Amazon?
You can draw the barcode here, but the number itself must be licensed from GS1 — Amazon checks it against the GS1 database. Random or resold numbers risk having listings removed.
What is the difference between UPC-A and UPC-E?
UPC-A shows all 12 digits. UPC-E is a compressed 8-digit form of the same number for small packages; it exists only for numbers that contain enough zeros.
Is a UPC the same as an EAN?
A UPC-A is an EAN-13 with a leading zero. Scanners worldwide read both, so a product with a UPC does not need an additional EAN.
What size should a UPC barcode be?
The nominal size is 1.469 × 1.02 inches (37.29 × 25.91 mm). GS1 allows 80 % to 200 %; stay at 100 % or larger unless your print quality is high.
