Size and appearance
GS1 allows 80 % to 200 % of the nominal size. Use at least 100 % when the printer is not high-end.
Scanners need dark bars on a light background. With these colors the code may not scan.

How an EAN-13 number is built
EAN stands for European Article Number; today the official name is GTIN-13. The 13 digits consist of a GS1 company prefix (which begins with a three-digit GS1 prefix such as 400–440 for GS1 Germany or 300–379 for GS1 France), an item reference that the company assigns to each product, and one check digit. The prefix tells you which GS1 organization licensed the number — not where the product was made.
The check digit catches typing and scanning errors. Starting from the right of the first 12 digits, multiply the digits alternately by 3 and 1, add the results, and take the amount needed to reach the next multiple of ten. For 400638133393 the sum is 89, so the check digit is 1 and the full number is 4006381333931.
To sell through retailers or marketplaces you need numbers licensed from GS1 in your country; self-invented numbers will collide with real products. For internal use, GS1 reserves the prefixes 200–299 for “restricted circulation” — that is what the random test button uses. Books carry their ISBN as an EAN-13 starting with 978 or 979, periodicals their ISSN with prefix 977.

How is the EAN-13 check digit calculated?
Take the first 12 digits. Counting from the right, multiply every second digit by 3, starting with the rightmost, and the others by 1. Add everything up; the check digit is what is missing to the next multiple of 10.
Can I make up my own EAN number?
Only for internal use, with a prefix from 200 to 299. For products sold in shops or on marketplaces such as Amazon you must license a GS1 company prefix or single GTINs from GS1.
What is the difference between EAN-13 and UPC-A?
UPC-A has 12 digits and is used in North America. An EAN-13 that starts with 0 is the same number as the UPC-A without that zero, and modern scanners read both.
Does the first part of an EAN show the country of origin?
No. The prefix identifies the GS1 organization that licensed the number to the company. A product with a German prefix may be manufactured anywhere.
How small may an EAN barcode be printed?
GS1 allows 80 % to 200 % of the nominal size. At 80 % an EAN-13 is about 29.8 mm wide; go smaller only with excellent print quality, and never cut into the quiet zones.
