How it works

How to create a barcode

The preview updates as you type.

  1. 1

    Choose the type

Code 128 suits most labels. Retail products need EAN or UPC, shipping cartons ITF-14 or GS1-128.

  2. 2

    Enter the data

Invalid characters and wrong check digits are explained immediately, with a one-click correction.

  3. 3

    Download

Save as SVG for printing at any size or as PNG, copy the image, print it — or create a batch from a list.

Why ToolCMB

Barcodes that scan

Encoded to the specifications, checked with a decoder.

13 symbologies

The linear barcodes used in retail, logistics, libraries, healthcare and manufacturing in one tool.

Check digits handled

EAN, UPC and ITF-14 check digits are calculated or verified; Code 39 and MSI can add theirs on request.

Vector output

SVG scales to any label size without blur. PNG is rendered on a whole-pixel grid so that bars stay sharp.

Batch mode

Paste up to 500 values — from a spreadsheet column, for example — and download all barcodes as one ZIP.

Your layout

Bar width and height, text size and font, colors, quiet zones, transparent background.

Scan warnings

A note appears when the chosen colors would make the code hard for scanners to read.

Private by design

Everything runs in your browser. What you type or open is not sent to a server.

Free, no sign-up

No account, no limits, no watermark — on a phone, tablet or computer.

Which barcode type do you need?

A linear barcode stores a short piece of data — usually a number that points to a record in a database — as a pattern of bars and spaces. The types differ in which characters they can hold and where they are accepted. For internal use (inventory, assets, tickets, member cards) you are free to choose, and Code 128 is almost always the best answer: compact, with a built-in checksum, and readable by every modern scanner.

Products sold in shops are different. The checkout expects a GTIN in an EAN-13 barcode (worldwide) or UPC-A (United States and Canada). The numbers are not free to invent: they are licensed from GS1, which assigns your company a prefix. A generator can draw the symbol for a number you own, but it cannot make a number valid for retail. Shipping units use ITF-14 or GS1-128, which can carry batch numbers, expiry dates and serial numbers alongside the GTIN.

Print quality decides whether a barcode scans. Keep the quiet zones — the blank margins left and right — free, print dark bars on a light background, never stretch a barcode horizontally, and prefer vector output (SVG) so that bars land exactly on the printer’s dots. Always test a printed sample with a real scanner or a phone app before a large print run.

Tips

  • For retail products use the EAN Generator or the UPC Generator — they add print sizes in millimeters and GS1 details.
  • Need to store a URL or more text? A 2D code from the QR Code Generator holds far more.
  • Create unique IDs to encode with the UUID Generator.
  • Place finished barcodes on a sheet and save it as one document with JPG to PDF.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can’t find your answer? Contact us — we reply quickly.

Are the barcodes free for commercial use?

Yes. The images you create are yours to use on products, labels and documents, without watermark or attribution. For retail product numbers you need a GTIN licensed from GS1.

Which barcode type should I use?

Code 128 for general labels and internal tracking, EAN-13 or UPC-A for products sold in stores, ITF-14 for cartons, and GS1-128 when batch, expiry date or serial number must be included.

Will the barcode scan?

The symbols follow the specifications and are verified with a decoder during development. Scanning then depends on print: sufficient size, dark bars on a light background and free quiet zones. Test a print before producing in volume.

Should I download SVG or PNG?

SVG for anything that is printed or resized — it is a vector format and stays perfectly sharp. PNG for office documents, web pages and software that cannot import SVG.

Can I create many barcodes at once?

Yes. Open “Create many barcodes at once”, paste one value per line (up to 500) and download a ZIP with one PNG or SVG file per value.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. The tool runs entirely in your browser. Your input is not uploaded, logged or stored on our servers.
