M4A vs MP3: why convert?

M4A files contain AAC audio in an MPEG-4 container. AAC sounds slightly better than MP3 at the same bitrate, but M4A isn’t supported everywhere — older car stereos, some Android apps, many websites and upload forms only take MP3.

Because both formats are lossy, use an MP3 bitrate at least as high as the M4A: a 128 kbps M4A converts well to 160–192 kbps MP3; a 256 kbps iTunes file to 256–320 kbps.

Protected iTunes files (.m4p with DRM) can’t be converted by any browser tool. Voice memos from iPhone (.m4a) work perfectly.

How do I convert M4A to MP3?

Drop your M4A files onto this page, pick a quality preset (192 kbps is a good default) and click “Convert to MP3”. Then download the MP3 files.

How do I convert an iPhone voice memo to MP3?

Share the memo to Files or AirDrop it to your computer, open this page and drop the .m4a file. Choose 64 or 96 kbps for speech and click “Convert to MP3”.

Will converting M4A to MP3 lose quality?

A little, because both are lossy. Choose an MP3 bitrate equal to or higher than the M4A’s and the difference is inaudible.

Can I convert protected iTunes songs (M4P)?

No. DRM-protected files can’t be decoded in the browser. DRM-free M4A files from iTunes work fine.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The MP3 encoder runs in your browser, so your files never leave your device.

Are tags and album art kept?

Yes. Title, artist, album, genre, year, track number and cover art are written to the MP3 as ID3 tags.

Can I convert many M4A files at once?

Yes — add up to 100 files (or drop a folder) and download all MP3s as one ZIP file.
