MP3 to WAV: what changes and what doesn’t
Converting MP3 to WAV decodes the compressed MP3 into raw PCM samples. The result sounds exactly like the MP3 — it can’t restore details the MP3 encoder removed — but it is in the format that audio editors, samplers, CD-burning software and many hardware devices expect.
Choose 16-bit / 44.1 kHz for CDs and maximum compatibility. Use 24-bit or 32-bit float if you will process the audio further (EQ, effects, mastering): the extra headroom avoids rounding noise. When reducing to 16-bit, gentle dither is added automatically.
WAV files are about ten times bigger than MP3s: one minute of 16-bit stereo takes 10.1 MB.
WAV size per minute
| Setting | Stereo | Mono |
|---|---|---|
| 16-bit / 44.1 kHz | 10.1 MB | 5.0 MB |
| 24-bit / 48 kHz | 16.5 MB | 8.2 MB |
| 32-bit float / 48 kHz | 22.0 MB | 11.0 MB |
| 16-bit / 22.05 kHz | 5.0 MB | 2.5 MB |
| 8-bit / 8 kHz | 0.96 MB | 0.48 MB |

Frequently asked questions
Can’t find your answer? Contact us — we reply quickly.
Does converting MP3 to WAV improve the quality?
No. The WAV contains exactly the sound of the MP3. It is useful when software or hardware requires WAV, or before editing.
Which WAV settings should I use?
16-bit / 44.1 kHz (the default when the MP3 is 44.1 kHz) is CD quality and plays everywhere. Use 24-bit or 32-bit float for editing.
Can I convert several MP3s at once?
Yes, add up to 100 files and download them all as a ZIP.
Are tags kept?
Title, artist, album, genre, year and comment are written as RIFF INFO tags. WAV can’t store cover art.
Is my music uploaded?
No. Conversion happens entirely in your browser.
Can I convert M4A or OGG to WAV too?
Yes. Any audio your browser can decode — including the soundtrack of videos — can be saved as WAV.
