Choosing the right silence settings
The threshold decides what counts as silence. Studio recordings have very quiet pauses (−60 dB and lower), so −50 dB works well. Recordings made in a room or with a phone have background noise around −45 to −35 dB — raise the threshold if pauses aren’t detected, lower it if quiet words are being cut.
The minimum pause length protects natural gaps: 0.5–1 s removes hesitations and dead air while leaving the space between words untouched.
Leave a short pause (e.g. 0.3 s) is the secret to natural results — a podcast with all gaps removed sounds rushed; one with long pauses shortened sounds tight but relaxed.
Suggested settings
| Material | Threshold | Min. pause | Leave |
|---|---|---|---|
| Podcast / interview | −45 dB | 0.6 s | 0.3 s |
| Lecture / screen recording | −40 dB | 1 s | 0.5 s |
| Voice-over (studio) | −55 dB | 0.4 s | 0.2 s |
| Music (trim start/end) | −60 dB | — | 0.1 s |
| Noisy phone recording | −35 dB | 1 s | 0.4 s |
Tips

- Speed up the tightened speech a little with the Speed Changer.

How do I remove silence from an audio file?
Drop the file onto this page, keep the default settings (−45 dB, 0.6 s) and click “Remove silence”. Use “Show silences” to check the detection first.
Can I only remove silence at the beginning and end?
Yes. Choose “Start & end only” — everything in between stays untouched.
Quiet words are being cut. What should I do?
Lower the threshold (e.g. from −45 dB to −55 dB) so only true silence is detected, or increase the minimum pause length.
Will the result sound choppy?
No. Pauses can be shortened instead of removed, and every cut is smoothed with a short crossfade.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Detection and processing happen in your browser.
Does it work with videos?
You can drop MP4, MOV or WebM files — the soundtrack is processed and saved as an audio file.
