How it works

How to calculate tiles

Area, tile, waste.

  1. 1

    Enter the area

Type the length and width of the floor or wall — or the area directly if you already know it.

  2. 2

    Enter the tile

Tile length and width, and the width of the grout joint.

  3. 3

    Add waste and boxes

Keep 10 % for straight layouts, then enter the tiles per box and the price to get boxes and cost.

Why ToolCMB

Count tiles, not guesses

For floors, walls, backsplashes and showers.

Any tile format

From small mosaics and subway tiles to 24 × 48 in (60 × 120 cm) slabs.

Grout joint counted

The joint makes every tile cover slightly more area — the calculator includes it.

Waste allowance

Cuts at edges, breakage and spares for later repairs are covered by a percentage.

Boxes and cost

Tiles are rounded up to full boxes, with the total cost from the price per box.

Area your way

Enter length and width, or type in an area you have already measured.

How many tiles do I need?

Divide the area to be tiled by the area one tile covers, joint included: tiles = area ÷ ((tile length + joint) × (tile width + joint)). For a 12 × 10 ft floor (120 ft²) with 12 × 12 in tiles and a ⅛ in joint, each tile covers 1.021 ft², so you need 118 tiles before waste.

Add a waste allowance: tiles at the edges are cut, a few break, and it pays to keep spares. Use about 10 % for a straight grid layout, 15 % for diagonal or herringbone layouts and rooms with many corners, and up to 20 % for large-format tiles in small rooms. With 10 %, the example comes to 130 tiles.

Tiles are sold by the box, so round up to full boxes and buy everything from the same batch — shade and calibre are printed on the carton and differ between production runs. For walls, calculate each wall separately and subtract large openings such as doors and windows; small cut-outs for sockets and pipes are not worth subtracting.

Tips

  • Laying laminate, vinyl or wood in the next room? Use the Flooring Calculator.
  • Need a concrete base or screed first? The Concrete Calculator gives the volume.
  • Painting the walls above the tiles? Estimate it with the Paint Calculator.
  • Dry-lay a row in each direction before you start: it shows whether you will end up with thin slivers at the edges, which you can avoid by shifting the starting line.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate how many tiles I need?

Divide the area by the area of one tile including the grout joint, then add your waste allowance and round up. The calculator does all three steps.

How much extra tile should I buy?

About 10 % for a straight layout, 15 % for diagonal or herringbone patterns and up to 20 % for large tiles in small or awkward rooms.

How many 12 × 12 tiles do I need for 100 square feet?

100 tiles without waste, since each covers one square foot. With 10 % waste, buy 110 — typically 10 or 11 boxes depending on the pack size.

Does grout width change the number of tiles?

Slightly. Wider joints mean each tile covers more floor. With small tiles and wide joints the difference can reach several percent.

How do I calculate tiles for a wall?

Multiply the wall width by the height to be tiled, subtract doors and windows, and enter the result as the area.

Are my numbers stored or sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs in your browser. Your last inputs are remembered on your own device only, so the form is still filled in when you come back; use Reset to clear them.
