WAV vs MP3 — which bitrate should you use?
WAV stores audio uncompressed — about 10 MB per minute of CD-quality stereo. MP3 uses perceptual coding to remove what you can’t hear, so the same minute takes 1.4 MB at 192 kbps.
For music, 192 kbps is a safe choice that is hard to distinguish from the WAV; use 320 kbps if you want the highest MP3 quality. For podcasts and spoken recordings, 64 kbps mono is plenty.
Keep your original WAV if you might edit the audio again: every MP3 conversion is lossy. 24-bit and 32-bit float WAV files are converted with full precision.
Size of a 4-minute song
| Format | Size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| WAV 16-bit / 44.1 kHz | 40 MB | Uncompressed |
| MP3 320 kbps | 9.6 MB | Highest MP3 quality |
| MP3 192 kbps | 5.8 MB | Excellent |
| MP3 128 kbps | 3.8 MB | Good |
| MP3 64 kbps mono | 1.9 MB | Speech |
