How to split a bill
Equal split in ten seconds, itemised split in a minute.
- 1
Choose how to split
“Equally” needs only the total and the number of people. “By what each person had” lets you assign items.
- 2
Add people and items
Name the people, enter each item with its price and choose who had it — or “Everyone” for shared dishes.
- 3
Add tip and tax
Set the tip percentage and any tax not yet in the prices, then read each person’s share in the table.
Fair to the person who only had a salad
Itemised splitting without the spreadsheet.
Equal or itemised
Start with a simple even split and switch to items when orders were very different.
Shared dishes
Mark starters, bottles or desserts as “Everyone” and they are divided equally.
Proportional tip and tax
Whoever ordered more carries more of the tip and tax — the fair way to do it.
Round up shares
Round every share to a whole amount to make transfers and cash easier.

The fair way to split a restaurant bill
An equal split is the fastest: total with tip ÷ number of people. It works well when everyone ate and drank about the same. When they did not — one person had water and a salad, another the steak and three cocktails — an itemised split avoids resentment.
In an itemised split each person pays for their own items plus an equal part of anything shared. Tip and tax should follow the food: if your items are 30 % of the subtotal, you pay 30 % of the tip and tax. That is exactly what this calculator does, so nobody subsidises anybody else.
Example: Alex has a $18 pasta, Sam a $22 burger, and they share $12 of starters. Subtotal $52; Alex owes $24, Sam $28. With 18 % tip the total is $61.36 — Alex pays $28.32 and Sam $33.04.
Which method fits which situation
| Situation | Best method | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Everyone ordered similar things | Equal split | Fast, and differences are small |
| Very different orders | By item | Each person pays for what they had |
| Some people did not drink alcohol | By item, drinks assigned | Drinks are often half the bill |
| Shared plates, tapas, pizza | Items for “Everyone” | Shared equally between all |
| One person is being treated | Leave them out of the people list | Their share is spread over the others |

Frequently asked questions
Can’t find your answer? Contact us — we reply quickly.
How do you split a bill evenly with tip?
Add the tip to the bill and divide by the number of people. A $120 bill with 18 % tip is $141.60; between four people that is $35.40 each.
How should tip and tax be split when orders differ?
In proportion to what each person ordered. Someone whose items make up 30 % of the subtotal pays 30 % of the tip and tax.
How are shared items handled?
Assign them to “Everyone”. Their price is divided equally between all the people in the list.
Why is the collected amount higher than the total after rounding?
Rounding each share up to a whole amount adds a little to every share. The difference is shown as “Collected after rounding” and usually goes to the tip.
Can I save the split for later?
Names and items stay on your device until you reset them, and you can copy the result or download the table as a CSV file.
Are my numbers stored or sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs in your browser. Your last inputs are remembered on your own device only, so the form is still filled in when you come back; use Reset to clear them.
