How much should you tip?
A tip is a percentage of the bill: tip = bill × rate ÷ 100. On a $64 dinner, 20 % is $12.80, so the total is $76.80; split between four people, each pays $19.20. The maths is simple — the hard part is doing it at the table while everyone waits, which is what this calculator is for.
How much to leave depends on where you are. In the United States and Canada, servers rely on tips and 18–20 % of the pre-tax bill is the norm for table service. In most of Europe, service staff earn a regular wage and a service charge is often included, so rounding up or leaving 5–10 % for good service is enough.
Check the receipt before you add anything: if a line says “service charge”, “gratuity included” or “service compris”, a tip has already been added and anything extra is optional. Groups of six or more are often charged an automatic gratuity in North America.
Typical restaurant tips by country
| Country | Usual tip | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| United States | 18–20 % | Calculated on the pre-tax amount; 15 % is the minimum for table service |
| Canada | 15–20 % | Card terminals suggest percentages on the after-tax total |
| United Kingdom | 10–12.5 % | Often added as an optional service charge |
| Germany | 5–10 % | Say the rounded total when you pay (“Stimmt so”) |
| France | Small change to 5 % | Service is included by law (“service compris”) |
| Spain | Round up to 5–10 % | Not expected; left for good service |

Frequently asked questions
Can’t find your answer? Contact us — we reply quickly.
How do I calculate a 20 % tip quickly?
Move the decimal point one place to the left to get 10 %, then double it. For a $64 bill: 10 % is $6.40, so 20 % is $12.80.
Should I tip before or after tax?
Etiquette guides in the US say before tax, because the tax is not part of the service. Many people tip on the full total for simplicity; the difference is small. Enter the tax under “More options” to tip on the pre-tax amount.
How do we split a tip between several people?
Enter the number of people. The calculator divides the bill and the tip equally and shows the tip per person, the bill per person and the amount each person pays.
What does “round up” do?
It raises the total, or each person’s share, to the next whole amount. The extra goes to the tip, and the calculator shows the tip percentage you actually end up paying.
Is a service charge the same as a tip?
A service charge is added by the restaurant and may or may not go entirely to the staff. If one is on the bill, an extra tip is optional.
Are my numbers stored or sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs in your browser. Your last inputs are remembered on your own device only, so the form is still filled in when you come back; use Reset to clear them.
