How it works

How to view an SRT file online

Three steps, no installation.

  1. 1

    Open the subtitle file

Drop an SRT, VTT or ASS file on the page, choose it with the file picker or paste the text. Up to 20 files can be opened at once.

  2. 2

    Read and check

Every subtitle appears in a table with its number, start and end time, duration, text, CPS and characters per line. Use the search box or switch on “Highlight problems”.

  3. 3

    Preview or export

Load a local video to see the subtitles on top of it, or export the file to SRT, VTT, ASS, TXT, CSV or JSON.

Why ToolCMB

What the SRT viewer shows

More than a text editor, lighter than a subtitle program.

Readable table

Number, start → end, duration, text, CPS and characters per line, with italics and bold rendered.

File statistics

Number of subtitles, total length, words, words per minute, average and maximum CPS, problems found.

Highlight problems

Marks subtitles that are too fast, too long, too short, overlapping, out of order or empty.

Video preview

Load a local video or audio file; subtitles are shown on top and the list follows playback.

Search

Find a word or phrase in a long file within seconds.

Encoding detection

Detects UTF-8, UTF-16 and Windows code pages, so accented letters are displayed correctly.

Ten export formats

Save as SRT, VTT, ASS, SBV, TTML, LRC, MicroDVD SUB, TXT, CSV for Excel or JSON.

Private

The viewer runs in your browser. Subtitle and video files are never uploaded.

What is an SRT file and how do you open it?

An SRT file (SubRip) is plain text. Each subtitle is a block made of a running number, a timecode line such as 00:01:02,500 --> 00:01:05,000, one or two lines of text and a blank line. Because it is plain text, any editor can open it, but a text editor only shows raw lines. An SRT viewer online turns the blocks into a table, so durations, reading speed and line lengths are visible at a glance.

The viewer reads more than SubRip. It opens WebVTT (.vtt), ASS/SSA, YouTube SBV, MicroDVD .sub, TTML/DFXP and LRC, and its tolerant parser repairs sloppy SRT files with missing numbers, dots instead of commas or missing blank lines. The character set is detected automatically, which matters for older files saved as Windows-1252 or Windows-1250 instead of UTF-8. If letters still look wrong, the encoding can be selected by hand.

Reading speed is shown as CPS, characters per second. Netflix allows up to 20 CPS for adult programs and 17 for children, TED uses 21, and the BBC aims for about 160–180 words per minute. With “Highlight problems” switched on, the viewer compares every subtitle with the chosen standard and marks lines longer than 42 or 37 characters, durations that are too short or too long, overlaps and subtitles in the wrong order.

Tips

  • Found errors while reading? The SRT Validator lists every issue with a verdict and can download a fixed file.
  • To change text or times, open the same file in the SRT Editor.
  • If the video preview shows the subtitles early or late by the same amount throughout, correct it with SRT Time Shift; if the delay grows over time, use SRT Sync.
  • Export as CSV to review a file in Excel with one subtitle per row.

How do I open an SRT file without installing software?

Drop the file on this page or paste its text. The SRT viewer shows the subtitles as a table straight away, on a computer, phone or tablet.

Are my subtitle or video files uploaded?

No. The viewer runs in your browser. Subtitle files and the video used for the preview stay on your device and are never uploaded.

Can I watch a video with the subtitles?

Yes. Load a local video or audio file and the subtitles are displayed on top of it. Click a time in the table to jump there; the list follows playback.

Why do I see strange characters such as ä instead of ä?

The file was saved in a different character set than the one used to read it. The viewer detects the encoding automatically, and it can be overridden manually if a file is still displayed incorrectly.

What does CPS mean in the table?

CPS is characters per second, a measure of reading speed. Netflix accepts up to 20 CPS for adults and 17 for children. The Subtitle CPS Calculator analyzes reading speed in more detail.

Can I convert the file to another format?

Yes. The viewer exports to SRT, VTT, ASS, SBV, TTML, LRC, MicroDVD SUB, TXT, CSV and JSON. For WebVTT options such as cue numbers and positions, use SRT to VTT.
