What the Subtitle Character Counter shows
The numbers subtitlers and translators check most often, without a spreadsheet.
Live character count
Characters with and without spaces, updated with every keystroke.

Each line gets a bar that shows how close it is to the character limit.
Words, lines, longest line
Word and line counts, and the length of the longest line in the text or file.
Time needed
Shows how long the typed text needs on screen at 17 characters per second.
Whole files
Open subtitle or text files to get the counts for every subtitle plus totals for the file.
Over the limit
Shows how many subtitles exceed the limit; a filter lists only those.

How are characters counted in subtitles?
Subtitle limits are counted per line, not per file. A line holds at most 42 characters under the Netflix and TED guidelines and 37 at the BBC and the German-language broadcasters, and a subtitle normally has no more than two lines. Spaces and punctuation usually count as characters. Formatting tags such as <i> do not, because viewers never see them, so this subtitle character counter leaves tags out of every count.
There are two ways to count. Type or paste text and the numbers update as you write: characters with and without spaces, words, lines, the longest line, and a bar for every line that shows how close it is to the limit. Or open subtitle and text files to get the counts for every subtitle plus totals for the whole file, including the number of subtitles that are over the limit.
Length is only half of the question; the other half is time. For typed text the counter shows how long it needs at 17 characters per second, a common reading-speed limit: a full line of 42 characters takes about 2.5 seconds. For files it adds an estimated reading time. The totals of characters and words also help when a translation has to be compared with its source or a job has to be estimated.
Character and reading-speed limits by standard
| Standard | Characters per line | Reading speed |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix | 42 | 20 CPS |
| TED / Amara | 42 | 21 CPS |
| BBC | 37 | about 17 CPS |
| ARD / ZDF / ORF | 37 | 15 CPS |
Tips
- Lines over the limit do not have to be fixed by hand: the Subtitle Line Breaker re-breaks them at sensible places in one pass.
- A subtitle can respect the line length and still be too fast to read. The Subtitle CPS Calculator compares the characters with the time on screen.
- For a full check of timing, overlaps, encoding and line length together, run the file through the SRT Validator.
- Leave spaces switched on unless the guideline you work to says otherwise; most subtitle standards count spaces as characters.

Do spaces count as characters in subtitles?
In most subtitle guidelines, yes: spaces and punctuation take up room on screen and are counted. The counter shows both figures, and a switch decides whether spaces count towards the limit.
Are formatting tags counted?
No. Tags such as <i> or <b> are not shown to viewers, so they are left out of the character count.
What is the maximum number of characters per line?
Netflix and TED allow 42 characters per line, the BBC and the German-language broadcasters 37. You can choose one of these presets or set your own limit.
Can I count the characters of a whole SRT file?
Yes. Open the file and the counter lists the characters and lines of every subtitle and adds totals: characters, words, lines, subtitles, the longest line and how many subtitles are over the limit. The counts can be downloaded as a CSV report.
How is the time for a text calculated?
For typed or pasted text the number of characters is divided by 17, a common limit of 17 characters per second. A text of 51 characters therefore needs about 3 seconds on screen.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. The Subtitle Character Counter runs in your browser; text and files are never uploaded. It is free and needs no account.
